SHELLEY GOLDSMITH

Shelly Goldsmith is amongst the foremost artists working with textiles in the UK at the present time. In 2002 she was awarded the prestigious Jerwood Prize for textiles: she has exhibited at major galleries and museums in Britain, in Europe, the USA and Japan *

Goldsmith's recent exhibitions include Indelible: Every Contact leaves a Trace at Fabrica Brighton, Cloth and Culture World Art Collections at the Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts, Norwich and Out of Place The New Art Gallery Walsall.
Residencies at both NOPE Studios Tokyo and Canberra School of Art, Australia have strongly influenced her practice as well as establishing strong research links.

An experienced lecturer, Goldsmith founded the pioneering Textile Art department at Winchester School of Art, University of Southampton; a senior lecturer from 1991 to 2006. She directed the BA (Hons) Textile Art and MA Degree in Textile Practice and Theory as well as PhD and AHRC Fellowship students.
Goldsmith contributes to a number of under/postgraduate programmes, including the RCA and Goldsmith's College, University of London. She is a Creative Agent for Future Creative CIC (formally Creative Partnerships Kent) working with young people in Kent schools.

Regularly presenting her practice at conferences and seminars Goldsmith recently spoke at Enfolded Meanings at the National Gallery and at Fabrications at Nottingham Trent University.
Goldsmith is a Maker Trustee for the Crafts Council of Great Britain.

Julie Evans: Lesson from a Guinea Hen


You’d be hard-pressed to find contemporary art as meticulously executed and tenderly honed as Julie Evans’s works-onpaper on display at Julie Saul Gallery. Using acrylic, gouache, colored pencil and what looks to be a superfine grade of glitter, she creates free-floating abstractions that nod to the New York School’s improvisatory verities, but gain their authority and allure from Indian art. Evans absorbed its methodologies and traditions while studying miniature painting in New Delhi. She isn’t slumming in the conventions of non-Western art. She’s a devotee who became the real thing.

Each drawing begins as an isolated puddle of color that is subsequently augmented by imagery: mandalas, botanical motifs and oddments of pattern. Evans reconciles extremes: splashy automatism and deliberate ornamentation; modestly scaled formats and expansive vistas; meditative reveries and The Big Bang. (With Julie Evans’ art, you’re never sure whether you’re looking at the cosmos or into a microscope.)

Her punctiliousness as a draftsman compels close inspection of, say, a bead-like trail of circles or an elegant distillation of waves.

The sprightly leaves of a “sprout”—arabesques rendered in pink, pinkish-cream and green—are almost unbearably sharp and slender. Evans, you think, must have the sharpest pencil in the world.

Her palette—filled, as it is, with radiant lemon yellows, musky greens and clarified oranges—is, by turns, electric and silky, crisp and delicate. Given that significant areas of uninflected paper are retained, the drawings aren’t unified by the chromatic sumptuousness typical of the paintings: Color plays second banana to drawing.

ELIZABETH DUFFY

Elizabeth Duffy's sculpture, installations, and drawings reexamine everyday materials to explore themes of transience and transformation, using techniques that are repetitive and labor-intensive. Her work has been shown widely in such places as the Aldrich Museum of Contemporary Art, The Islip Art Museum, Wave Hill, White Columns, and Holland Tunnel Gallery in New York and at Raw and Co. Gallery in Cleveland and Dartmouth College in New Hampshire. She has won awards including the New York Foundation for the Arts and the Pollock Krasner Foundation, and several fellowships from the MacDowell Colony and Yaddo.

In 2005 Elizabeth began a collaboration with Brian Miller and established the Loku Press. Together they have published artists’ books and have exhibited their ongoing project “A Series of Minor Miracles.”

Elizabeth's work is in the collections of Deutsche Bank, the Heard Museum, Dartmouth College, and in numerous private collections. She lives and works in Providence, Rhode Island and Acworth, New Hampshire.

Elizabeth Duffy, hace escultura,instalaciones, dibujos y reexamina materiales cotidianos para explorar temas de la fugacidad y la transformación, utilizando técnicas que son repetitivas y de mano de obra intensiva. Su trabajo ha sido mostrado en lugares como el Aldrich Museum of Contemporary Art, El Museo de Arte de Islip, onda Hill, columnas blancas, la galería del túnel Holland en Nueva York en la galería de crudo y Co. en Cleveland, el Dartmouth College en Nueva Hampshire .

LA ARTISTA HABLA...
Nací en Vilagarcía de Arousa (Pontevedra) Galiza en 1984, aunque resido en Teo (A Coruña).
Mi trabajo se posiciona en una continua búsqueda de salidas desde la pintura; mis propuestas se centran en el estudio de las formas que presentan los tejidos realizados en ganchillo, sus formas de representarlos en los gráficos, sus colores, sus materiales, sus formas, y tratando así de llevarlo al campo de la pintura, estructurándola de alguna forma mediante estos gráficos.
Esto me ha llevado a utilizar múltiples materiales, tales como el acrílico, la cuerda, el papel, el plástico,... entremezclando asimismo diferentes técnicas dentro de múltiples disciplinas (pintura, dibujo, diseño, ornamentación, ilustración...) reflejando así la época que me ha tocado vivir, que no es más que una fusión de todo aquello que fue y está siendo. Trato un poco de reflexionar con ello acerca de la pintura en la actualidad, de recuperar su papel decorativo para poder transmitir ese discurso que reflejo en esta breve explicación.

No todo está escrito aquí, artista multidisciplinar, pintura, escultura, intervenciones...esta completa y polifacética chica vive entre Vilagarcía, Pontevedra, y Santiago de Compostela dónde ha situado su estudio y centro de trabajo, merece la pena visitar su blog, ver alguna más de sus infinitas obras y como no, conocerla!!!

Esta semana tuvo lugar el desfile de la graduación de l@s estudiantes de la prestigiosa escuela Londinense Saint Martins.
El acto tuvo lugar en el York Hall en Bethnal Green,en Londres, por supuesto!

LES JUMELLES

Les Jumelles es una firma creada en 2009 por dos hermanas gemelas,a su regreso a Barcelona después de haber vivido varios años en Paris, de ahí el nombre de "les Jumelles" que significa gemelas en francés.
Les Jumelles combinan piezas vintage con piezas contemporaneas en una amplia colección de collares y pulseras, creadas con piezas vintage y combinadas con nuevas piezas. La mayoria de cadenas son nuevas y los charms y colgantitos que se utilizan provienen de viejas fabricas de Francia y de otros lugares del mundo donde han permanecido 40-50 años empaquetadas en su embalaje original.

Cada una de estas piezas tiene una historia detrás, pequeños tesoros que han permanecido perdidos para ser descubiertos.


Hoy he descubierto a estas chicas, y no he podido resistirme y comprarme una joyita, tienen cosas muy lindas, este carrusel se viene para Santiago conmigo :)
